Does a small block chevy flow water through th epump all the time?
Does a typical small block chevy flow water all the time or is there a time its dry? If the thermostat is closed does water still circulate through the pump?
A short answer for you would be to tell you…yes it still pumps. Just not “through” the engine. Keyword being through.
A better understanding of how a waterpump works can be seen when you take one apart. Unlike “pressurized” pumps, an automotive water pump moves water through directional control. When one direction is blocked, the water simply flows around the “vanes/impellers”. It moves in a very confined space/area inside the pump and block until the thermostat opens.
Think of it as swiming in a bathtub…while you may be able to “stroke” and the water is moving, you’re not going anywhere, and neither is the water.
