How to install a motherboard (not the hardware part)?
I wanted to upgrade this PC Im using right now. I wanted to put a new motherboard, processor, and ram in this thing, but how do you install the software part of the motherboard? Do I need an OS CD/DVD (Which I don’t have since I bought a prebuilt PC)? If so do i need the Upgrade or Retail version of OS, or does it matter? Right now my computer is running Windows XP Home. Is there a way to buy the upgrade version, upgrade the PC from XP to Vista, then install the motherboard, put in the Upgrade DVD of Vista before at startup and repair and install the motherboard? I want to do the the easiest and cheapest way. If you could answer all my questions it would be much appreciated.
1st if you haven’t bought the motherboard yet, check the back of your tower and see if it has a removable plate where your back USB ports and audio ports are located. This is a must unless you want to cut out the back of the tower for making your new motherboard fit into it. If it has a removable plate that knocks out then you are good to go. Your new motherboard will come with things like back plate, IDE and SATA cables as well as a driver disk, which has all your drivers on it for the motherboard. Best advice is to only install your LAN drivers for internet hookup and go onto the motherboard website and download all the latest drivers. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116488
OEM Vista premium x64 is almost the same price as xp home nowdays. x64 allows you to run 4 gigs of ram and ram is cheap also. Get some 800mhz ram and you will be within your budget. Beware, for vista you have to have an IDE DVD rom… Unless you can get the drivers for AHCI/raid to enter by pressing F6 during boot up of the windows install, then you have to use an IDE DVD. Not a big deal but just giving you the heads up if you don’t have a DVD rom…
Install vista and then use your driver
