chinchillas? is it OK for my chinchilla to eat card board?
is it ok to use it to cover up the barrs on the parts of my cage so he does not have to walk on barrs?
i am glad you asked this question. Wire cages can cause a condition called “bumble foot” and can affect chinchillas that are kept in an cage that only has wires. Covering the shelves with cardboard is okay, but securing it there may be an issue. Invest in a few wood shelves (you can find jumping shelves at petsmart, if needed), but the best method is to secure a long wood shelf inside the cage and put the sleeping hutch on it. This will last long than cardboard, but will also help you chin feel more comfortable.
If you are able to invest, Quality Cage Co. has wonderful cages that are very affordable for chinchillas. The cages are wire, and come in all sizes, but the the shelves are wooden. The cages also feature a tray that easily removes for cleaning. Had I been aware of this company before having a custom all-wood cage built, I would have purchased one in a second!
See the link below for cage purchase or an idea on how to improve your current cage- perhaps the owner will assist with shelving.
