My laptop’s onboard sound is dying. What are my options?

Before you answer – It’s not a driver issue and yes, I have tried installing the latest Realtek AC97 drivers.

It’s a hardware problem.

When I boot, I usually get a crackling sound when it tries to play a sound, and nothing thereafter. Sometimes it works ok for a while, but then dies. No, it’s not a speaker wire thing, when the sound goes crackly, it slows the machine down (including video playback).

So, what are my options? I assume sending the laptop off to a service centre would be a waste of time. If it were a desktop I’d just put in a new soundcard. Should I go with USB or PCMCIA sound? What else could I try?

have you tried hitting it?

honestly, i know you are confident that its not a wiring problem but my laptop sound goes on and off and all it takes is a good smack to get it working again.

just hit it a few times and maybe itll work. its worth a try anyway before you send it away or open it up.
