Hard drive question: What is the difference between “PATA”, “SATA”, “IDE”, “IDE ULTRA ATA 100″?
I’m trying to get a 2d (slave) drive for my PC, which supports PATA drives. But I’m finding it impossible to distinguish all these terms! Are some of the ones mentioned above the same? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Okay, so let’s get out of acronym hell first:
ATA: Advanced Technology Attachment
SATA: Serial ATA
PATA: Parallel ATA
IDE: Integrated Drive Electronics
Ok, ATA is just a type of connection of which there are two now, SATA and PATA. Almost all drives are IDE, it just means that there is a circuit board on the drive itself. Back in the day you used to have to add a circuit board to your computer when you put a hard drive in, not so anymore. The Ultra and 100 are just to indicate transfer speed.
