Can I solder the wires on a sata connector to an ata/ide cable to get it to work? If so which ones?
I want to know if it is possible just to solder certain wires of the IDE Paralel cable to the leads on the SATA connector from my hard drive to get it to work in my external case. I don’t need it to work fast just work.
The SATA drive works in a different way from the IDE. A serial interface sends data in a continuous stream, and multiplexes it to split off the individual bits needed to form the data at the receiving end, and vice versa. A parallel device sends all bits simultaneously with no multiplexing/demultiplexing.
Think of it as a freeway; the parallel device is like a freeway with all lanes open; traffic goes on all lanes simultaneously.
Now imagine if an accident closes all but one or two lanes; the traffic has to merge, or multiplex, into the open lanes, and has to expand, or de-multiplex, back into the freeway after passing the accident. This is what the Serial path does.
Suggest you just go and buy the correct type of drive; after all, the prices have been coming down lately, so its not that terribly expensive.
