Dell Power Supply has burned out, what can I replace with?

My dads 3 month old Dell desktop took a power shot last night. It appears that the power supply got burned up. The computer was not running at the time. When you try to turn it on now, nothing happens. No lights, nothing. The power supply is a BESTEC Model ATX0300D5WB Is there something I can replace it with that will bolt right in? Do you think the power supply is the problem?

Yes i do believe the power supply is your problem. If your not getting no fan noise, lights etc. Before you call Dell try the following:
Take the power cord off the back of the system.Open the case, You will see a plug on the motherboard that looks like–http://www.karbosguide.com/books/pcarchitecture/images/979.jpg
Unplug that and plug it back in.Plug the power back up to the system and attempt to power it on. If that dont work:
You can contact Dell for a replacement. Especially since the system is under warranty. Or it should be.In most cases they overnight it to you or you can elect to have a tech come to your house to replace it if you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself but its really simple.

Pay close attention to what your unplugging when replacing the power supply. You will have two plugs going to your motherboard alone and then plugs to each device such as your hard drive, cd drives etc.

Velocity Micro

If iwant to install a pci express 2.0 card do i need to buy a pci express 2.0 motherboard?

here are my system specs http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/velocity-micro-promagix-e2240/4505-3118_7-32638532.html

PCI express 2.0 cards will work fine in a PCI express slot, but you will have slower speeds than in a 2.0 slot. If you already have a computer without a 2.0 slot than a 2.0 card would work fine, though.

Fans Computer

Fans Computer

can i use my car battery to power a couple small 12volt computer fans?

im trying to vent a small area from heat and my little collection of 9 volts are running out of juice to fast. i imagine the 2 12volt fans could draw from the car battery for a long time without recharging.

how can i do this. do you have a link that explains?

thanks.

Yes, you can easily attach computer fans to a car battery. However, a fully charged car battery is actually over 12v and can have up to 15v on it’s terminals when being charged (see source). This can easily be sorted by placing a some silicon rectifiers in series to drop the voltage a little which is possibly easier than using dropper resistors (as the diodes act as constant voltage drops) or more complex regulator circuits which are not really needed in this case. Each one will drop the voltage by about 1v, so I’d suggest three 1N4001 in series. They just need to be of a greater current handling than your fan. The band of one should go to the other end of the next. Then, connect the band of the final one to the red (=ve) of the fan. The black of the fan then goes to the -ve of the battery, whilst the other end of the rectifier chain goes to the positive of the battery.

As to how much your fan takes, it will usually be stamped on it. It will be usually between 200-350mA (0.2-0.35A). As car battery is usually about 40Ampere hours (40Ah) so to work out how log you can run your fans for in hours, simply divide 40 by the combined fans current. For example, if each fan takes 0.2A, the total is 0.4A. Therefore your battery will last for 40/0.4=100 hours. however, you should never run a lead acid car battery down to zero, that’s asking to shorten its life dramatically or make it totally dead and un-rechargeable.

However, some of the other answers don’t make sense and are plain wrong, which shows the danger of putting questions like this on un-moderated sites such as this:
thunder1lord
“no u will fry the fans fast u got a lot of amperes there!! a computer fan cant take that kind of amps :/ u can try 4 r 6 D size battery’s they should last longer”
The fans will get fried by over-voltage, not the ability of the car battery to provide lots of amps. D size batteries will definitely NOT last longer. A D cell will be usually only be a few Ah, so they will definitely last less. Even the very best will be 10Ah at the absolute most and hence only last a quarter of the time.

ishootbirds2: “car batteries also store a deadly amount of current, enough to kill half a dozen humans, so take extreme caution when hooking anything up to them. make sure you don’t make shorts, your wiring is well done.” Car batteries can not kill humans as their VOLTAGE is too low.. IF they could, there would be a lot more dead motor mechanics. It’s perfectly safe to put your fingers across a car battery. You won’t feel a thing and you certainly won’t die. however, they are heavy, so drop one on your head, then they can kill.

At least Technobuff knows what he’s talking about!

Mobile Celeron

Mobile AMD Sempron™ 3500+ (1.8GHz/512KB) OR Intel® Celeron® M Processor 380 (1.60GHz/1MB Cache/400MHz FSB)

which one is better for basic use such as internet and ms office pro

For basic and interent use…go for the Celeron mobile processor anyday! AMD is more gaming oriented .
Thanks,
Colin.
