Fan Socket

Fan Socket

How do I install a P4 socket 478 fan/heatsink?

My fan on my 3-yr old computer failed so I got a new one. It is a Thermaltake for the P4, socket 478, obviously an old model (eg, no “manual” on their site).
It came w/no instructions. I have read about using thermal paste but do I really need to? I heard it voids any warranty. I have never installed one of these and I don’t want to ruin the cpu.
Anyone have detailed instructions?

The thermal paste is to transfer the heat from cpu to heatsink. You should add it to your heatsink.Just add like your old cpu paste design. Then take out your thermaltake and lookout how to install it.It must be one or two direction that can position the cooler.Just try it.I think its very simple or if you confuse again, then type the product name at yahoo search.Maybe there its a manual to install it.

That system looks good!

If you like AMD, stick to that. But I notice you have a high performance cpu cooler, which leads me to believe you intend to overclock….am I right?

Well…it’s no secret that Intel chips overclock higher than AMD chips. Also, while AMD does make the ‘true’ quad-core, ultimately the Intel still outperforms AMD.

Personally, I would switch to the Q9300 for ~$50 more and overclock it to 3GHz. You will have a perfect 1:1 ratio with your RAM (400MHz * 7.5 multiplier) with the option to overclock higher if you like.

It produces less heat, has 3x more cache, will overclock higher than the AMD, and you won’t have to worry about a buggy processor.

Here is a cpu chart for you to see. It does not have the X4 9850 or Q9300, but you can compare apples to apples with the X4 9700 and Q6600 to prove the point that Intel performs better at the same stock clock speed as AMD.

Just what I would do. Your system is great as is, so do what you want.

Heatsink Heat

Heatsink Heat

Do you have to apply heat-sink paste when installing a Intel e8400 with stock heatsink?

If its brand new the stock heatsink will already have thermal paste applied. Look for the gray patch below your copper base heatsink.
